Thing you need to know

On March 15th, Hungary commemorates the Revolution and War of Independence of 1848–49, a pivotal event in the nation’s quest for autonomy from Habsburg rule. This national holiday is marked by various ceremonies and public gatherings, especially in Budapest, reflecting both historical reverence and contemporary political expressions.
The Hungarian Revolution of 1848-49 was part of a wider wave of uprisings that spread across Europe, known as the Springtime of Nations. It was a fight for national sovereignty, political reforms, and civil liberties, inspired by liberal ideas and the growing Hungarian nationalist movement. The revolution played a crucial role in Hungary’s path toward independence and modern democracy.
The 1848 revolution was driven by desires for civil liberties, press freedom, and national independence. Although initially successful, the movement was eventually suppressed by Austrian and Russian forces. Nevertheless, it laid the foundation for future efforts toward Hungarian sovereignty, making March 15th a symbol of national pride and resilience.
Locals wear a tricolor on their shirts or jackets as a sign of commemoration.

Political dimensions of the celebrations
March 15th serves as a platform for political discourse, with various parties and organizations organizing events to convey their perspectives. These gatherings often reflect current political sentiments, adding a contemporary layer to the historical commemorations. Due to the upcoming elections some parties might try to use this occasion to give motivational speeches thus minor disturbances or debates are to be expected.

Transportation considerations
Given the numerous events, especially in central Budapest, attendees should anticipate road closures and modifications to public transportation schedules. Planning ahead and consulting local transit authorities for updates is advisable to navigate the city efficiently during the festivities. Additionally, the holiday schedule applies for all transportation meaning that rides are scarcer and less frequent on this day. Some good news – less cars in the city
This year, for the first time, the Pesti alsó rakpart (Lower Quay of Pest) will be open to those looking to exercise and relax during the March 15-16 weekend. As in previous similar initiatives, visitors can enjoy a car-free environment along the section of the quay between Margit Bridge and Erzsébet Bridge right beside the Danube. Many activities will be available and even few bars will open for the occasion.

Closed shops
Most of the shops and groceries will be closed or will operate with shorter opening hours on this day. Try to prepare in advance or try shopping in the centre of Budapest. Regardless, most of the tourism-related attractions (spas, museums, boat tours etc.) will be available on this day.
